Christmas Tatting Photo used under Creative Commons from tsayrateTatting is used to make beautiful lace edges for around a collar or other areas of your clothing. The technique is also used to make doilies, Christmas decorations like snowflakes and other pieces of art.
It used to be that a shuttle was used to make these decorative crafts but a needle can also be used but the end result looks a little different then when the traditional shuttle is used.
The shuttle is a wide piece that can be held easily in your hand and has a hook or a point on one end to work the lace. The shuttles can be made from many types of material from metal to bone. The antique and vintage ones are now collectors items.

No other tools are needed to tat your lace as long as your shuttle has a point or hook on one end.One hundred and fifty years ago most clothing has to be homemade. Tatting was used to give a little decoration to your dress around the collar and sometimes the sleeves. Also this skill served you well in making pretty pieces that could be placed on your table to be under cups or other decorative items that would enhance your sitting room.
So much time was spent in making clothing at home that the women of the household never had much free time. With all the cleaning, cooking and other chores around the house, dressmaking was sometimes quite a chore and some could make a living making clothing for others. Tatting lace was a nice skill to have and would enhance any garment.

Dear Tatting Fans,
I am writing to you in behalf of your Heavenly Father. He is seeking you like a lost sheep. You remember the Bible story? It is about a shepherd who has 100 sheep. But when he brings the sheep home one night, one is missing. He then leaves the 99 sheep and goes out into the wilderness until he finds that lost sheep. In this parable the shepherd goes out to search for the one lost sheep-the very least that can be numbered. So if there had been but one lost soul, Christ would have died for that one. To read more click Lost Sheep
