For those who want to fly without a lot of expense a light sport aircraft certificate may be one of the best ways to do so. You don't
have to spend a lot to get off the ground.
Light Sport Aircraft (or LSA) is a type of aircraft whose take off weight is no more than 1,320 pounds (600 kilograms) and with a maximum speed of no more than 120 knots. They include gliders, heavier ultralights, gyroplanes, powered parachutes, trikes, balloons, airships and more. A gyroplane (autogyro or gyrocopter) has a free spinning rotor that turns from the air coming up from the rotor. This gives life to the aircraft and keeps it in the air. Forward |
motion is provided from the propeller at the rear of the fuselage. The Gyrocopter is different from a helicopter in that the helicopter pushes the air downward by its rotor blades while the Autogyro rotor blade pushes up air similar to a glider wing giving it lift.The Ultralight is a lightweight aircraft that can carry one or two persons. You don't need any training or a license but if your ultralight empty weight is over 254 pounds you would need the light sport license.
