The guppy is my favorite aquarium fish. I used to have several tanks divided between my guppies and other tropical fish that could live well together. My biggest tank was for the male guppies. This aquarium also had one Betta fish and several other kinds of fish to liven up the view.

Then I had my female guppy tank and tanks for babies and breeding. I loved to mix up the colors to get a lot of variety in my guppies by breeding one color with another. Of course to get a certain color professional fancy guppy breeders will keep all the same colors together.

Guppies are highly prolific livebearers. The gestation period of a guppy is 21-30 days, with an average of 28 days.

Guppies (millionfish) are not only popular with me but are one of the most popular fish in the world to have in an aquarium. Guppies are tiny, about 2-6 centimeters in length. The females are usually larger than the males. The babies are born alive and must be kept safe from larger guppies including the mother. My method of keeping the babies safe was to have a special holder in my baby guppy tank that had holes large enough for the babies to get out but kept the mother in. This way when she had the babies they would quickly swim away from her to safety.

Guppies can have a lot of young. After about 21 to 28 days the mother fish will have her young and they can range in count from 2 to 100 and sometimes even more. The mother fish can store the sperm from the male and have several litters with out seeing another fish. This means that once you bring your female guppy from the store she may already be pregnant.

Water temperature is important. It should be kept around 82 F (27 C). The young guppies usually take around one or two months to grow up and are easy to care for. Guppies can breed with molly fish, but the young are usually male and infertile.
