This 156 ounce (4,8 kg) nugget was found by an invidividual prospector in the Southern California Desert using a metal detector.Do you dream of looking for gold? If so, this page is a good resource to get you started. Gold Mining can range from panning for gold in streams, to actually digging it out from the earth.
I used to live in gold country in Oregon. Behind the house up on top of a hill was a mining claim where someone lived in a cabin and looked for gold all summer. While exploring around the area I found holes dug in the ground where the prospector was digging. Up the road from where I lived is my grandmother's house. During the 1800's the Chinese were prospecting for gold and found a lot of it. I can find the holes they dug today. Unfortunately there was strife between the locals and the Chinese felt they had to leave. Feeling that it was to risky to bring out the gold with them they hid it somewhere around my grandmothers property with plans to return and get it when things were safe to retrieve it. They never did and that gold is still there waiting for someone to find it. I would like to live in the area again and look for the lost treasure and do some gold panning in the local creek and winter streams.
My father was a teacher in the area and one of his students spend his summers finding gold and then would take college classes during the winter. The student kept his gold in jars that he placed on a shelf in his home. He had enough to live on and pay his college expenses.
Gold! Gold! How and Where to Prospect for Gold (Prospecting and Treasure Hunting)
There are different methods to finding gold. Panning is when you look for it in creeks and rivers. The gold pan is filled with sand and gravel and shaken around with added water. Gold is more heavy so will settle on the bottom of the pan while the other material is washed away. The best places to find gold in streams are at the bottom of waterfalls, under rocks and in black sand. You may not find a lot of gold but probably enough to live on if you go to the right area. Having a mining claim might be the best way to go to look for gold since you can live there and gold pan or dig as you want. You would have to check with the government to find out if you can look for gold on BLM land.
Metal detecting is another method of finding gold. This technique can sometimes bring excellent results. Notice the photo of the gold nugget at the top of this page. It was found with a meter detector.
Sluicing for gold is using a box to get gold out of the gravel. It can bring in a lot more gold then panning.
Dredging is using a small machine that floats on the water. It is actually a sluice box with a suction hose to suck up the gravel and sand from the bottom of a stream or river.
Hard rock mining is when the gold is encased in rock instead of sand or gravel.

Dear Gold Mining Fans,
I am writing to you in behalf of your Heavenly Father. He is seeking you like a lost sheep. You remember the Bible story? It is about a shepherd who has 100 sheep. But when he brings the sheep home one night, one is missing. He then leaves the 99 sheep and goes out into the wilderness until he finds that lost sheep. In this parable the shepherd goes out to search for the one lost sheep-the very least that can be numbered. So if there had been but one lost soul, Christ would have died for that one. To read more click Lost Sheep
