Europe became the center of doll making until the 1860's when the United States began the production of them. At first dolls were expensive and only the wealthy families could easily afford them. Then after World War II plastic was developed and used for doll making which brought down the prices so every child could get one.
The materials for the doll range from china, clay, paper to plastic. Antique dolls are now collector's items with the most expensive ones made in France from the 19th century. Some of these dolls are selling for up to $22,000.
